It Sounds Almost Too Good to Be True. It Isn't.
The idea of arriving at a dental practice with failing teeth and leaving the same day with a full set of permanent, fixed teeth sounds like something out of a future that hasn’t happened yet. Patients who have been through the process will tell you it is very much real, and that the day they had it done was one of the most significant of their lives.
Smile-in-a-Day is not a shortcut. It is not a simplified version of implant treatment that compromises on outcome for the sake of speed. It is an advanced surgical and restorative procedure that requires a high level of clinical precision, meticulous planning carried out in the weeks beforehand, and a clinician with the experience to execute it safely and to an exceptional standard.
Dr Nikhil Oberai has been placing implants at this level for years. He holds an MSc in Implant Dentistry from the University of Manchester, carries a 99.5% success rate across hundreds of cases, and is the clinician other dental practices across Cheshire refer their most complex same-day implant cases to. Smile-in-a-Day is not something he offers alongside his other work. It is one of the things he is most known for.
What Actually Happens on the Day
Smile-in-a-Day uses the same fundamental principles as full arch implant treatment, with the critical difference being that the fixed teeth are placed on the same day as the implants themselves, rather than after a healing period.
Four to six implants are placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Immediately after surgery, a full bridge of fixed teeth is secured to those implants. You leave the practice the same day with a complete, fixed set of teeth in place.
That bridge is a high-quality temporary prosthesis. Three to four months later, once the implants have fully integrated with the jawbone through a natural process called osseointegration, you return to have your final permanent teeth fitted. The final result is the finished version of your new smile, precision-crafted to your facial profile and designed to last a lifetime.
The reason Smile-in-a-Day is possible comes down to careful pre-treatment planning. Digital scans, x-rays, and 3D imaging allow Dr Nik to plan the exact position, angle, and depth of every implant in advance. By the time the procedure begins, every detail has already been decided. The day itself is the execution of a plan that has been prepared thoroughly over the preceding weeks.
Smile-in-a-Day Is Designed for Patients Who Are
- Living with a full arch of failing teeth
If you have a full arch of teeth that are failing, heavily decayed, broken, or simply beyond saving, Smile-in-a-Day allows the entire arch to be replaced in a single visit rather than through a prolonged series of individual extractions and treatments.
- Currently wearing dentures and ready for a permanent solution
For patients who are already missing their teeth and wearing dentures, Smile-in-a-Day offers the opportunity to move from a removable appliance to a fixed, permanent set of teeth in one appointment. Many of our patients describe this as the moment they stopped thinking about their teeth altogether.
- Wanting the most efficient route to fixed teeth
Smile-in-a-Day significantly reduces the total treatment timeline compared to a staged implant approach. For patients who are motivated to complete treatment efficiently without a prolonged interim period, it offers a compelling and clinically sound pathway.
- Patients who have been told same-day implants aren’t possible elsewhere
The suitability of Smile-in-a-Day depends on factors including bone quality, bone volume, and overall oral health. What makes one patient unsuitable at one practice may not apply when assessed by a more experienced clinician with access to more advanced planning tools. If you have been turned away, come and speak to Dr Nik before accepting that answer.
How Smile-in-a-Day Compares to a Staged Approach
Both Smile-in-a-Day and staged full arch implant treatment arrive at the same destination: a complete set of fixed, permanent teeth. The key differences are in the timeline and the experience along the way.
Smile-in-a-Day | Staged Implant Treatment | |
Implant placement | Single appointment | Single appointment |
Teeth on the same day | Yes, immediately after surgery | No, fitted after healing period |
Interim period | Temporary bridge from day one | Period without fixed teeth in some cases |
Total treatment timeline | Shorter overall | Longer overall |
Final result | Identical | Identical |
Clinical complexity | Higher, requires advanced planning | Standard |
Best suited to | Patients wanting an efficient timeline | Patients where a staged approach is clinically preferable |
Dr Nik will assess your individual situation at your free consultation and recommend the approach that is genuinely right for you, not simply the more expensive one. Both pathways lead to the same exceptional long-term result.

- What to Expect
Your Smile-in-a-Day Journey, Stage by Stage
Free Consultation
Your journey begins with a free, thorough consultation with Dr Nik. He will carry out a full clinical assessment, take x-rays and clinical photographs, review your dental and medical history, and discuss your goals honestly. If Smile-in-a-Day is the right option for you, he will explain exactly why and what the process will involve. If another approach would serve you better, he will tell you that too.
Treatment Planning
Once you have decided to proceed, detailed 3D imaging and digital scanning are used to plan the precise placement of every implant. This planning stage is what makes same-day placement possible and what ensures the procedure is carried out safely and accurately. Your treatment plan, timeline, and final costs are confirmed at this stage.
Smile-in-a-Day Procedure
On the day of your procedure, Dr Nik places four to six implants into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. The extractions of any remaining failing teeth are carried out at the same appointment if required. A temporary fixed bridge is then secured to the implants before you leave the practice. Most patients describe the experience as far more comfortable and manageable than they anticipated.
Recovery and Review
The first few days after your procedure involve rest and some initial tenderness, which is normal and manageable. Dr Nik will provide clear aftercare instructions and you will have access to the team throughout your recovery. Review appointments are scheduled in the weeks following your procedure to monitor healing and integration.
Final Teeth Fitted
Three to four months after your procedure, once the implants have fully integrated with your jawbone, you return for your final appointment. The temporary bridge is replaced with your permanent, custom-designed prosthesis. This is the completed result of everything the treatment was working towards, and for most patients it is an extraordinary moment.
Long-Term Care
Your new teeth are cared for like natural teeth. Brush twice daily, floss regularly, and attend your routine check-up appointments. With proper care, your implants are designed to last a lifetime.

Smile-in-a-Day Carried Out Personally by Dr Nikhil Oberai
Smile-in-a-Day is a procedure that demands precision at every stage. The planning must be exact. The surgery must be executed with care. The restorative work must be designed to achieve both an immediate functional result and a beautiful long-term outcome.
Dr Nik carries out every stage of this process personally. He does not pass the surgical work to one clinician and the restorative work to another. From your first consultation to the day your final teeth are fitted, you are in the same hands throughout.
His MSc in Implant Dentistry from the University of Manchester, his 99.5% success rate, and his role as a referral clinician for complex cases across the North West are all directly relevant to a procedure of this level. Smile-in-a-Day requires a clinician who has done this many times, who understands how to manage complexity, and who does not cut corners when the stakes are high.

The Day Everything Changed
I had spent two years knowing my teeth needed to come out and just not being able to face it. When I finally came in to see Dr Nik, I genuinely did not expect to leave the same day with a new smile. I cried on the way home. Not because anything hurt, but because I could not believe the difference. That was eighteen months ago and I have not stopped smiling since.”

- Frequently Asked Questions
Confused? Let us help
Is Smile-in-a-Day painful?
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic so you should not feel pain during the surgery itself. Afterwards, most patients experience some tenderness and swelling for a few days, which is entirely normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. The level of discomfort is typically much less than patients expect before their procedure.
How long does the procedure take?
The Smile-in-a-Day procedure typically takes several hours in a single clinical session. The exact duration depends on the number of implants being placed and whether any extractions are required at the same appointment. Dr Nik will give you a clear expectation of timings at your consultation.
Will I need bone grafting?
In many cases, no. The All-on-4 technique, where implants are placed at a specific angle to maximise contact with available bone, is designed to work well even in patients with some degree of bone loss. Whether bone grafting is needed depends on your individual bone volume and quality, which Dr Nik will assess thoroughly during the planning stage.
What do temporary teeth look like?
The temporary bridge fitted on the day of your procedure is designed to look natural and function well from day one. It is not a placeholder that looks unfinished. Most patients are pleased with the temporary result, and the final prosthesis fitted three to four months later takes that result further.
Can I eat normally afterwards?
In the first weeks after your procedure, a softer diet is recommended while healing progresses. As integration develops, you can gradually return to a full diet. Once your final teeth are in place, you can eat freely without restriction, which for many patients is one of the most significant improvements to their daily life.
How long will my Smile-in-a-Day results last?
The implants themselves are designed to last a lifetime with proper care. The prosthetic teeth attached to them are exceptionally durable but may, over many years, require maintenance or replacement. Your long-term outcome depends on good oral hygiene, regular check-ups, and not smoking.
