The Part of Teeth Straightening That Most People Underestimate
Straightening your teeth is one thing. Keeping them straight is another.
After any teeth straightening treatment, whether Invisalign, fixed braces, or any other orthodontic approach, the teeth have a natural tendency to drift back towards where they came from. This is not a flaw in the treatment. It is simply how teeth behave when the forces acting on them change. The surrounding bone and gum tissue need time to fully stabilise around the new tooth positions, and during that period and beyond, the teeth need to be held in place.
That is what retainers do. They are not optional. They are not a precaution for patients who had particularly difficult cases. They are an essential part of every teeth straightening outcome, and the patients who protect their results most reliably are the ones who understood this from the start and took their retainer wear seriously.
Vivera retainers are made by Invisalign using the same proprietary material as Invisalign aligners. They are fabricated from 3D digital scans of your teeth in their final straightened positions, ensuring a precise fit that holds every tooth correctly and comfortably. They are at least 30% more durable than other leading clear retainer brands, which means they last longer, maintain their fit for longer, and provide more reliable protection over time.
At Heritage Smile Group, we offer Vivera retainers to all patients completing Invisalign treatment at our Wilmslow and Northwich practices, and to patients who have completed orthodontic treatment elsewhere and are looking for a high-quality retainer to replace a worn or lost one.
What Happens to Teeth Without Retention
Understanding what actually happens to teeth that are not retained properly after straightening is the most effective way to appreciate why this stage of treatment matters as much as it does.
When teeth are moved orthodontically, the bone surrounding them remodels to accommodate the new positions. This remodelling takes time, typically several months after treatment ends. During this period the teeth are particularly susceptible to drift because the bone has not yet fully stabilised around them. After this period, a more gradual tendency to shift continues throughout life as part of the natural ageing process of the mouth.
Patients who wear their retainers consistently during and after this stabilisation period maintain their straightening results reliably. Patients who stop wearing their retainers, or who wear them inconsistently, often find their teeth drift noticeably within months. In some cases the drift is significant enough that the patient feels they need to repeat their orthodontic treatment, which is an entirely avoidable outcome.
The most common reason patients stop wearing their retainers is not that they decide not to. It is that the retainer wears out, becomes uncomfortable, warps, or is lost, and they do not get it replaced promptly. Vivera retainers address this directly by being more durable than standard alternatives and by being supplied in sets of four retainers per arch, giving patients replacements ready to use rather than having to wait for a new one to be made every time a retainer needs replacing.
What Makes Vivera Retainers Different
Vivera retainers are clear, custom-made retainers manufactured by Invisalign using the same SmartTrack material used in Invisalign aligners. They are fabricated from a precise 3D digital scan of your teeth in their final position, which means the fit is exact and every tooth is held correctly from the first night of wear.
Made from SmartTrack Material
The same proprietary material that makes Invisalign aligners exceptionally precise and comfortable is used in Vivera retainers. SmartTrack plastic applies consistent, gentle force across the full surface of the teeth, holding them securely without creating pressure points. It is also thinner and more flexible than many standard retainer materials, which makes Vivera retainers more comfortable to wear than many alternatives.
At Least 30% More Durable
Vivera retainers are clinically tested to be at least 30% more durable than other leading clear retainer brands. In practice this means they are more resistant to cracking, warping, and surface degradation over time. A retainer that maintains its shape and fit for longer provides more reliable retention and needs replacing less frequently.
Supplied in Sets of Four
Vivera retainers are supplied in sets of four retainers per arch rather than a single retainer. This means patients have replacement retainers ready to use if a retainer is lost or damaged, without having to wait for a new one to be made. It also means patients can rotate through retainers, extending the overall lifespan of the set and reducing the total long-term cost of retention.
Custom-Made from a 3D Scan
Each Vivera retainer is fabricated from a 3D digital scan of the teeth rather than a physical impression. The precision of the fit this produces is significantly higher than retainers made from traditional impressions, and the scan data is stored so that future sets can be ordered without needing to come in for new impressions each time.
The Retainer Wear Schedule That Protects Your Results
The wear schedule for Vivera retainers follows the standard retention protocol for most orthodontic cases, though Dr Natasja will always advise on the specific schedule appropriate for your individual case.
- The First Three to Six Months: Full-Time Wear
In the period immediately following the completion of orthodontic treatment, retainers should be worn full time, meaning 20 to 22 hours per day, removing them only for eating, drinking anything other than water, and cleaning. This is the period when the bone is still remodelling around the new tooth positions and the risk of drift is highest. Full-time wear during this window is the most important investment in the longevity of your result.
- After Six Months: Night-Time Wear
Once the initial stabilisation period is complete and Dr Natasja is satisfied with how the teeth are holding, the wear schedule typically transitions to night-time wear only. This means wearing the retainer every night while sleeping. For most patients this becomes a straightforward part of the nightly routine and remains manageable indefinitely.
- Long-Term: Ongoing Night-Time Wear
The honest answer to how long retainers need to be worn is: for as long as you want to keep your teeth straight. This is not an exaggeration. The natural ageing process of the mouth means that teeth continue to have a tendency to shift throughout life, and the only thing reliably preventing that shift is retainer wear. Many patients who have maintained their straightening results for ten, fifteen, or twenty years are simply patients who never stopped wearing their retainer at night.

Vivera Retainers Are Available To
Patients Completing Invisalign Treatment at Heritage Smile Group
All patients who complete Invisalign treatment at Heritage Smile Group are offered Vivera retainers as the retention option of choice. They are the natural continuation of Invisalign treatment, made from the same material by the same company, and they represent the most reliable way to protect the investment you have made in straightening your teeth.
Patients Who Have Completed Orthodontic Treatment Elsewhere
Vivera retainers are available to patients who have completed orthodontic treatment at another practice and are looking for a high-quality, durable replacement for a worn, lost, or damaged retainer. A 3D digital scan of your current tooth positions is taken and Vivera retainers are fabricated from those positions. Please note that this provides retention at your current tooth position and does not correct any drift that may have already occurred.
Patients Whose Previous Retainers Have Worn Out or Been Lost
Many patients who had orthodontic treatment years ago find that their retainers have worn out, broken, or been lost, and their teeth have shifted slightly as a result. If the shift is minor, Vivera retainers at the current position may be sufficient to stabilise the teeth and prevent further drift. If significant movement has already occurred, Dr Natasja will assess whether a short retreatment course with Invisalign would be beneficial before new retainers are made.
How to Look After Your Retainers
Vivera retainers are more durable than most alternatives, but they do require straightforward care to maintain their performance and longevity.
Rinse your retainers with cold water each time you remove them. Clean them daily with a soft toothbrush and a small amount of non-abrasive toothpaste or a retainer cleaning solution. Never use hot water on your retainers as this can warp the plastic. Store them in the case provided when they are not being worn. Keep them away from pets, who are unfortunately attracted to them.
If your retainer develops a crack, becomes uncomfortable, or no longer fits properly, contact the practice promptly. Do not continue to wear a retainer that does not fit correctly as it will not provide reliable retention and may cause discomfort.

Led by Dr Natasja Kashyap
Vivera retainers at Heritage Smile Group are prescribed and fitted by Dr Natasja Kashyap. She will advise on the appropriate wear schedule for your individual case, answer any questions you have about retention, and ensure the retainers fit correctly before you leave the practice.
Her approach to the retention stage of treatment reflects her wider philosophy: it is not completed when the last aligner comes out. It is completed when the result is stable and the patient has everything they need to maintain it long term.

Questions Patients Ask About Vivera Retainers
How long do Vivera retainers last?
Vivera retainers are at least 30% more durable than other leading clear retainer brands and are designed to maintain their fit and effectiveness significantly longer than standard alternatives. The exact lifespan depends on how often they are worn, how well they are cared for, and individual factors such as whether the patient grinds their teeth. Because they are supplied in sets of four, patients have replacements ready when needed rather than having to wait for a new retainer to be made.
Can I order replacement Vivera retainers without coming in?
In many cases, yes. Because Vivera retainers are fabricated from 3D scan data that is stored digitally, replacement sets can often be ordered without the need for new impressions or a clinical appointment. Contact either practice to discuss ordering a replacement set and we will advise on what is required based on your case history.
What if my teeth have moved since my Invisalign treatment?
If you feel your teeth have moved since completing Invisalign treatment, contact the practice and book an assessment with Dr Natasja. A small amount of movement is common if retainer wear has been inconsistent, and in many cases a short refinement course with Invisalign followed by new Vivera retainers is all that is needed to restore the result. Dr Natasja will assess the current position of your teeth and advise on the most appropriate course of action.
Are Vivera retainers better than fixed retainers?
Fixed retainers, sometimes called bonded retainers, are thin wires bonded to the back surface of the teeth that hold specific teeth permanently in position. They are an effective retention option for patients who are concerned about compliance with removable retainers. However, they only hold the teeth they are bonded to and do not provide whole-arch retention. They can also be difficult to clean around and may debond over time. Vivera retainers hold all teeth across the arch. Many patients use a combination of a fixed retainer on the lower front teeth and a Vivera retainer for whole-arch retention. Dr Natasja will discuss all options with you and recommend the most appropriate approach for your individual case.
Do Vivera retainers look the same as Invisalign aligners?
Yes. Vivera retainers are made from the same clear material as Invisalign aligners and are virtually invisible when worn. Most people cannot tell the difference between a patient wearing aligners and one wearing retainers, which is one of the reasons they are so easy to commit to long term. They do not have the same level of tooth-moving force as aligners because they are designed to hold rather than move, but they look and feel very similar.
How do I clean my Vivera retainers?
Clean your Vivera retainers daily using a soft toothbrush and a small amount of non-abrasive toothpaste, or a retainer cleaning tablet dissolved in cold water. Rinse with cold water before inserting and after removing. Never use hot water as it can warp the plastic. Avoid leaving retainers in direct sunlight or in a hot environment such as a car on a warm day for the same reason.
Can I wear Vivera retainers if I did not have Invisalign?
Yes. Vivera retainers can be made for any patient who needs clear retainers, regardless of which orthodontic treatment they had previously. A 3D digital scan is taken of your current tooth positions and the retainers are fabricated from that scan. If you have completed orthodontic treatment elsewhere and need a high-quality clear retainer, Vivera is an excellent option.
