Dental Check-ups in Cheshire

Regular dental check-ups are the foundation of a healthy smile and a confident one. We make every visit as relaxed and straightforward as possible, and we welcome patients who have not seen a dentist in years with no judgement and no lectures.

The Appointment That Saves You from Much Bigger Ones Later

There is a particular kind of patient who finds their way to a dental check-up after a long gap. They are not there because anything is hurting. They are there because they finally decided to stop putting it off. Maybe someone close to them had a dental problem that could have been caught earlier. Maybe they were getting married, or starting a new job, or simply reached a point where they felt ready.

Whatever brought them in, almost without exception, they say the same thing at the end of their appointment. It was not nearly as bad as I expected.

A dental check-up at Heritage Smile Group is exactly what it should be. A thorough, calm assessment of your teeth, gums, and oral health, carried out by a clinician who is interested in your long-term wellbeing rather than in finding things to treat. Problems caught early are almost always simpler and less costly to address than problems left to develop. The check-up is the thing that keeps small issues small.

We are accepting new patients at both our Wilmslow and Northwich practices. If it has been a while, that is fine. If you are nervous, that is fine too. We will work at your pace and we will never make you feel uncomfortable about the gap.

The Six Things Your Check-up Is Checking

Understanding what the clinician is actually looking for during a check-up helps demystify the appointment and makes it feel less like something being done to you and more like something being done for you.

Tooth Decay

Decay begins when the bacteria in the mouth produce acid that slowly dissolves the hard enamel and dentine of the tooth. In its early stages it is often invisible to the patient and painless. Caught at this stage it can sometimes be managed with preventive treatment or a small filling. Left undetected it progresses into the tooth, eventually reaching the nerve and requiring root canal treatment or extraction. The check-up is the thing that catches it before it reaches that point.

Gum Disease

Gum disease begins with inflammation of the gum tissue caused by bacterial plaque that has not been fully removed by brushing. In its early stage, gingivitis, it is usually reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. If it progresses to periodontitis, the inflammation begins to affect the bone supporting the teeth and becomes much more difficult to manage. Regular check-ups identify gum disease in its early, manageable stages.

Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is one of the most rapidly increasing cancers in the UK and is significantly more treatable when caught early. The five-year survival rate for oral cancer diagnosed at stage one is around 80 to 90 percent. When diagnosed at a later stage, survival rates are significantly lower. Regular screening is one of the most important preventive measures available.

Wear and Erosion

Tooth wear from grinding, acidic diet, or acid reflux is something many patients are entirely unaware of until a clinician points it out. Left unaddressed, wear progressively reduces the height and structure of the teeth, eventually requiring complex restorative treatment to address. Identifying and monitoring wear early allows protective measures to be put in place before significant damage has occurred.

Changes to Existing Restorations

Fillings, crowns, bridges, veneers, and implants all require monitoring over time. Margins can open up, crowns can crack, implants can develop changes in the surrounding bone. Regular check-ups allow these changes to be identified and addressed early rather than developing into failures that require more extensive treatment.

Soft Tissue Changes

The soft tissues of the mouth, including the tongue, cheeks, lips, and floor of the mouth, can develop changes that range from benign and self-resolving to changes that warrant further investigation. Regular check-ups monitor these tissues and ensure any changes that need attention are identified promptly rather than discovered late.

What a Dental Check-up at Heritage Smile Group Involves

A check-up at Heritage Smile Group is thorough without being overwhelming. Here is what you can expect.

  • A Full Clinical Examination

The clinician examines every tooth in your mouth, checking for signs of decay, cracking, wear, or any other changes that need to be monitored or addressed. This includes the surfaces between the teeth that are not visible without a mirror and probe, and the areas around existing restorations such as fillings, crowns, or implants.

  • A Gum Health Assessment

The health of your gums is assessed as a standard part of every check-up. Gum disease is one of the most common dental conditions in the UK and one of the most frequently missed because it is often painless in its early stages. Checking the health of the gum tissue, the depth of the gum pockets around each tooth, and looking for early signs of recession or inflammation allows any concerns to be identified and addressed before they progress.

  • An Oral Cancer Screen

Every check-up includes an oral cancer screening as a standard part of the examination. The clinician examines the soft tissues of the mouth including the tongue, floor of the mouth, cheeks, lips, and throat for any changes that warrant further investigation. Oral cancer is significantly more treatable when caught early, and the screening adds very little time to the appointment.

  • X-Rays When Appropriate

Dental x-rays allow the clinician to see between and beneath the surfaces of the teeth that cannot be assessed visually. Not every check-up requires new x-rays, but where the clinical picture warrants it or where x-rays are due as part of a routine cycle, they are taken and explained clearly as part of the appointment.

  • A Discussion About Your Concerns and Goals

Check-ups are not just for problems. They are an opportunity to raise anything you have been thinking about, whether a concern about how a tooth looks or feels, a question about a treatment you have read about, or simply a conversation about what good oral health looks like for you long term. The clinician will listen and answer honestly.

  • A Treatment Plan if Needed

If any concerns are identified, the clinician will explain clearly what they have found, why it matters, and what the options are. There is no pressure to commit to anything on the day. You will leave with a clear picture of the state of your oral health and any recommendations, with time to think about how you would like to proceed.

How Often You Actually Need to Come In

The standard recommendation of a check-up every six months is appropriate for many patients, but the right interval for you depends on your individual oral health.

Patients with healthy teeth and gums, no active decay, and a good oral hygiene routine may find that annual check-ups are sufficient to maintain their health effectively. Patients with a history of gum disease, those who are more prone to decay, or those with complex restorations or implants may benefit from more frequent monitoring.

At Heritage Smile Group, the clinician will recommend the check-up frequency that is right for your individual situation at your appointment, and will explain the reasoning behind that recommendation clearly. The goal is always the right level of care for you specifically, not a blanket schedule applied uniformly to everyone.

What to Expect at Your Check-up

We aim to make the referral process as straightforward as possible for referring practices.

Step 1: Booking Your Appointment

Call either practice or use the online booking form to arrange your check-up. New patients are warmly welcomed at both our Wilmslow and Northwich locations. If you are nervous, let us know when you book so we can prepare for your visit.

Step 2: Your Arrival

You will be greeted by our reception team and made comfortable before your appointment. There is no rush. If it is your first visit, you will be asked to complete a short medical history form so the clinician has all the relevant background before your examination.

Step 3: The Examination

The clinician will carry out a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and soft tissues. This includes a check for decay, gum disease, tooth wear, changes to any existing restorations, and an oral cancer screen. X-rays are taken where clinically appropriate and everything is explained clearly as you go.

Step 4: Your Results and Recommendations

Once the examination is complete, the clinician will talk you through their findings in plain language. If anything needs attention, they will explain what it is, why it matters, and what the options are. There is no pressure to commit to anything on the day.

Step 5: Your Next Steps

You will leave with a clear picture of your oral health and a written treatment plan if one is needed. Whether you decide to proceed with any recommended treatment or simply book your next check-up, our team will help you arrange whatever comes next at a pace that suits you.

If You Are Nervous About Coming In

Dental anxiety is very common. It affects a significant proportion of adults in the UK to some degree, ranging from mild apprehension to a level of anxiety that has prevented people from attending the dentist for many years. If this describes you, you are not alone and you are not unusual.

At Heritage Smile Group, we are experienced in treating nervous patients and we take dental anxiety seriously as a clinical concern rather than dismissing it or treating it as an inconvenience. Here is what you can expect if you come to us as a nervous patient.

We will listen before we do anything. Your first appointment can be entirely conversational if that is what you need. You do not have to open your mouth until you feel ready.

We will explain everything before we do it. Nothing will happen without your knowledge and consent. If you want to stop at any point, you stop.

We will never rush you. Our appointments are longer than the industry standard and there is no queue of patients being hurried through. You will have the time you need.

We will not judge. However long your teeth are, however long it has been, we have seen it before and we are not here to make you feel bad about it.

We can discuss sedation. For patients whose anxiety is significant, conscious sedation options can be discussed at your consultation. This allows treatment to be carried out in a relaxed, semi-conscious state and is an option worth knowing about if the idea of being fully aware during dental treatment is what is holding you back.

If you would like to speak to us before making an appointment, please call either practice. Our team will be happy to have a conversation before you come in.

Patients Who Came to Us When Others Said It Could Not Be Done

“I was referred to Dr Nik by my own dentist who was honest enough to say that my case was beyond what he was comfortable placing himself. That honesty meant a lot, and Dr Nik more than justified the referral. The treatment was thorough, well planned, and the result has been excellent.”

How Much Does Dental Check-up Cost?

We know that cost is one of the first things on most patients’ minds when considering Dental Check-up, and we think that is a completely reasonable place to start. Treatment is a meaningful investment and you deserve to know what you are getting into before you commit to anything.

At Heritage Smile Group, every patient receives a written treatment plan with a full, itemised cost breakdown before any treatment begins. There are no hidden extras, no charges added after the fact, and no pressure to proceed before you are ready.

Heritage Smile Group’s practice plan spreads the cost of your routine care, including check-ups and hygiene appointments, over affordable monthly payments. Ask our team about joining when you call.

Questions Patients Ask About Dental Check-ups

A standard check-up at Heritage Smile Group typically takes between 30 and 45 minutes. A new patient examination is slightly longer, usually around 45 to 60 minutes, to allow for a full assessment of dental history and a more detailed discussion of your oral health and goals.

There is nothing specific you need to do before a check-up. Brushing your teeth before you arrive is always welcome but is not a requirement. If you have any dental records or x-rays from a previous practice you would like to share, bringing them along or requesting they are forwarded in advance can be helpful, but it is not essential.

A check-up should not be painful. The examination involves a visual inspection and the use of a small mirror and probe to check the teeth and gums. Some patients with sensitive gums find the gum assessment slightly uncomfortable, but this is usually mild and brief. If you experience any significant discomfort during your check-up, tell the clinician immediately and they will adjust their approach.

If anything is found during your check-up that needs attention, the clinician will explain what they have found, why it matters, and what the options are. You will not be pressured to commit to treatment on the day. You will leave with a clear picture of the situation and a treatment plan if one is needed, and you can take the time you need to decide how you would like to proceed.

Not necessarily. Whether x-rays are taken depends on your individual clinical situation and how recently x-rays were last taken. The clinician will explain if and why x-rays are recommended at your appointment.

Absolutely. We welcome nervous patients and understand that dental anxiety is a significant and real concern for many adults. Please tell us about your anxiety when you book your appointment so we can prepare for your visit accordingly. You can also call us before you book to have a conversation about your concerns before committing to an appointment.

The cost of a check-up at Heritage Smile Group will be confirmed when you book. Our practice plan spreads the cost of routine care including check-ups and hygiene appointments over monthly payments. Ask our team about the practice plan when you call.

There is no upper age limit for dental care. Regular check-ups are beneficial at every stage of life and the oral health concerns that are most important to monitor actually increase in significance with age, including gum disease, dry mouth, root decay, and the health of any dentures or implants. Our clinicians are experienced in caring for patients of all ages.
